Welcome to the finale of Live to Dance! Actually, technically, the finale was last week, and this is just the results show. Soon, probably in about 58 minutes, America’s Favorite Dance Act (as determined by the 2,753 People of America who voted) will be named and awarded $500,000.
Since this is the end of our journey together, let’s take a moment and reflect. Ponder, even. I remember lo those many weeks ago when Paula Abdul made people chant her name and dance to her songs while she and a Newsies cast member and woman with sideways hair pushed buttons that made “ding!” sounds. It was a fair and accurate representation of the diversity of dance groups across America (or within a short driving distance of Los Angeles and New York), including the old but not feeble, the young but not unskilled, the many shades of mediocre, plus a bonus smattering of shirtless men. I couldn’t wait for this show to change the world. Unfortunately, unless the current Snowpocalypse can be directly linked to this show, I am still waiting. I will end this meandering paragraph with a few lessons I have learned: 1) Always include proper punctuation in the name of your dance crew; 2) More is less, except when it is enough; 3) Pandering will get you approximately halfway; and 4) I have a healthy appreciation of shirtless men. Now let’s jump in, shall we?

There's no skirting around the fact that I'm a dress girl (pun intended) - always have been, forever will be. For my my whole life dresses have been my favourite article of clothing (in elementary school I even tried to launch a movement amongst my fellow female classmates to only wear dresses, but alas it seems my peers weren't quite as enamoured with frocks as I was and the "dress lovers club" only lasted for a few weeks), and I never tire of bopping around the internet looking at vintage and vintage inspired examples of this timelessly beautiful garment of clothing.
Sometimes when I chance upon a dress that particularly sets my heart aflutter, my mind will suddenly start playing the classic Top Gun song "Take my breath away", because that's what an amazing frock has the power to do to me.
There are a number of factors that can elicit that feeling of breathlessness for me, such as the time period the dress hails from (or is designed to look like it came from), colour (red, pink, black and teal are all perpetual faves), cut (generally speaking, the more feminine the better), neckline (I especially like princess necklines), and pattern (I'm such a sucker for florals).
Should a dress happen to sport one or more of these elements it usually grabs my attention right away, as the classically beautiful frock featured in today's post did.

Fashiongasm: LFW Sass & Bide
You could call my love for the Sass & Bide collection at London Fashion Week a full-on obsession. The color palette is ridic. The combination of ikat, tie-dye and global patterns makes my little fashion heart melt. I would wear the entire collection and I'm going to have to find those suede booties! Movie Review - Gnomeo & Juliet (***)
We've gone a whole six weeks or so without a new movie for kids in theaters, so the timing on Gnomeo & Juliet couldn't be better. This Disney/Touchstone production - originally set up at Miramax - borrows elements from Toy Story while taking a page (or two) directly out of Shakespeare's classic tale of doomed lovers. Parents - fret not though. The ending of Gnomeo is a lot happier than what Shakespeare intended. The movie itself is mostly enjoyable, inoffensive fluff that will keep the kids happy and parents mildly amused.
Set in the backyard of two warring houses, Gnomeo & Juliet tells the story of two garden gnomes who fall in love despite their family's wishes. The basic plot structure is recycled Shakespeare, though for huge stretches of the movie it hardly bears a resemblance. These garden gnomes come to life while humans are away, and enjoy drag racing on lawnmowers. The whole movie is set to Elton John songs - some new, most classics. It's a peculiar choice (I'm not sure what connects Elton John to lawn ornaments), but certainly a welcome one. Stylistic choices - be they right or wrong - are always better than no choices at all.
Gnomeo is directed by Kelly Asbury, a co-director on the far-superior Shrek 2. The script is by a committee of about 20 different people. Okay, maybe not that many, but the end credit for screenplay took up the entire screen so let that tell you something. If the story seems a bit incoherent at first, don't worry - the movie finds its footing as it progresses. You may even find yourself touched by the story of a lonely, plastic pink flamingo - I was. In any event, viewers can always marvel at the detailed textures on the gnomes (seriously, how long did it take to animate every ceramic crater or piece of chipped paint?!) and wondering which famous British actor is voicing which character. For the record, the voice cast includes James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, and PatrickStewart, among others - an impressive lot, to be sure. Lame puns aside, this one's alright.
